Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..." Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. It's a reminder that we start each day with a positive attitude. We know that there will be challenges, but we also know that we can handle them. We can't control our circumstances, but we do control how we respond to them.

"I can't wait to make a mistake!" From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room.

If a student doesn't feel comfortable, they won't try anything new. We are all learners, and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes, because we know that is where the real learning happens. Ours is a Title I school, serving a largely immigrant, Latino population, in a densely-populated urban city. Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes, and be the first college graduates in their family. There are no shortcuts!

My Project

Technology is a wonderful tool. It is not the central focus of our work, it is the tool that allows students to access their learning standards more deeply.

Every day in our class, my students are developing 21st Century skills: collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking.

These tablets will allow them entry into different areas. We've been learning coding and computer programming, and how to apply those skills in different situations.

Students have to figure out new solutions to different problems. This year, we've been very fortunate to acquire a number of Wonder Workshop Dash robots for our classroom. We're trying to get enough tablets that all robots can be in use at the same time with students collaborating in pairs. Students will be working together to code with Scratch programming language to control them.

Using the new Sketch Kit accessory, my students will be able to "express their creativity and exercise their critical thinking and spatial reasoning skills as they draw geometric shapes, patterns, words, and more." They'll be putting the A in STEAM. Having Fire 7 tablets with Alexa in class will even allow them access to the Kindle library for reading e-books. These tablets will be amazing tools in our tech classroom!
