This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

William Paul Thurston said, "Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms: it is about understanding." I base my classroom and my teaching on this statement. I want my students to understand math and be able to use it.

My students are wonderful energetic intelligent children who are growing up in a large urban district.

Our school is the largest elementary school in the state made up of approximately 40% English Language Learners and 30% students with identified special needs. Our students are capable of great things and we have high expectations for all of them. In order to maintain our high expectations many of the teachers at our school have been attending additional training on effective strategies for teaching math at a deeper level.

My Project

The workshops we attended focused on fractions and how to make this difficult concept more understandable. My students will be able to use the cuisenaire rods and tiles to model fractions and solve problems involving fractions. They also will utilize tangrams to model additional fraction situations. They will use the Chromebooks to access Greg Tang's math website where our focus will be on utilizing the game Satisfraction to further review and practice fraction concepts as well as other games present on the website.

This project will allow our students to engage in more engaging and hands-on experiences with fractions.

We hope that these experiences will help students understand these difficult concepts. We have seen our students struggle through high school and beyond because of difficulties with fractions. My hope is that a full understanding of fractions at a lower grade level will help our students to be more successful in the rest of their math career.
