Many middle school students lack the knowledge of good hygiene and life skills that accompany hygiene. It is a daily task reminding our students to use deodorant, take showers, wash their hair AND brush it, brush their teeth, as well as the many aspects of their responsibility to make it important.
Living in a very low-income, rural community, my students rarely complain about their needs!
So if they are hungry, if they don't have clean clothes, or if they don't have hot water to take a shower, they usually won't say anything unless it is addressed.
Many of my students have difficulty in the general education classroom. My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. We are an Inter-related classroom that supports the various personalities, level of academics, and numerous other challenges.
My Project
Providing our students with healthy snacks will help them to reach their full potential, while their mind and bodies are growing! The nutrition we can offer will help to alleviate the feeling of hunger that many of them experience daily.
Educating them on the importance of personal hygiene can influence their way of thinking, or lack of knowledge.
My students need the necessary supplies to support personal hygiene as well as an appropriate educational curriculum, that is applicable to their individual needs. The curriculum "Taking Care of Myself: A Hygiene, Puberty and Personal Curriculum for Young People with Autism" will meet this need.
"Hygiene and Related Behaviors for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum and Related Disorders: A Fun Curriculum with a Focus on Social Understanding" will also support the need for our students to learn about the appropriate hygiene, at their age. This can make a difference in their knowledge on the importance of personal hygiene.
