Lockdown Box- Emergency Snacks for Students In Lockdown Mode
Help me give my students bottles of water, goldfish snacks, fruit snacks, and other assorted snacks to fill a "Lockdown Box." The Lockdown Box will be a precaution and used in the event of a school emergency.
My fifth-grade students are fun-loving, inquisitive, and competitive. My students enjoy playing sports, playing video games, and listening to music. We live in a small rural community in South Carolina. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 70 percent of our students living at or below the poverty level. As indicated by district, state, and national testing data, our students are performing below average in reading/language arts, math and social studies.
As a teacher of students living in poverty, the challenge to motivate struggling students to academically perform well in a classroom is an incredible obstacle- almost unsurmountable.
With school safety and school incidents in the headlines nearly daily we have to be prepared for the unthinkable. As teachers we have had training on how to react and protect our students in the event of an intruder in our buildings. We have lockdown drills with students so that we can prepare and rehearse what to do if the threat of danger is real.
My Project
As a teacher, we are prepared for all kinds of things. Students with academic needs, emotional needs, physical and physiological needs. With that being said, we need to prepare for physical threats and physical danger that can happen at school. To be preventative, we have emergency drills that we practice on a regular basis.
With school safety being a major concern, I would like to have a Lockdown Box to use in emergency situations.
It has been reported that in the event that a school is a target of violence, it often takes hours to clear a scene and investigate events. With that being said, I would like to offer students water and snacks as we wait for clearance from emergency personnel. Hopefully, this box will never have to be used, but in the event that it is needed, I want it to be fully stocked while we wait. Safety is priority and preparedness is a necessity.
