Describe my students? No label, statistic, or cliché will suffice! What reliable reference point exists in an age when the structure of a young brain itself is developing differently than it did just a decade ago? When we are tasked with guiding this unique generation from a world we barely recognize into a world that doesn’t even exist yet? And in a community beset by socioeconomic collapse and change?
Well, our 100 sixth grade students aspire to put their proud rural hometown back on the map!
And my colleagues and I are committed to helping them compete. We encourage emotional resilience, lifelong learning, financial fitness, technological proficiency, civic pride and global awareness.
Our region has lost much of its industry, we are a high poverty school, and our students have diverse intellectual and emotional needs, but we choose to see this adversity as a strength in becoming interconnected with the world and attracting and opening businesses in our city, county, and region.
My Project
Many students today have a terribly limited awareness of geography and their place in the world. Many can't find their homes on a map or tell the difference between a city and a state or a country and a continent.
I'd like to help improve their navigational skills and geographical awareness by tying geography, history, and current events into the English Language Arts curriculum, and tying the topographical features into our science curriculum.
My students and I will love having access to quality maps without always needing to boot up a computer and a projector when identifying places in our novels and articles.
