My Students
Have you ever made a loaf of bread and experienced the great smell of baking bread? Bread making is actually quite easy, once you learn some basic techniques, and get some hands-on practice. Plus nothing boosts your self-confidence more than pulling a fragrant loaf of bread out of the oven.
My class is made up of 18 lovable three and four year old boys and girls.
My little ones are curious, imaginative, loving, creative, honest, and cute. The community is diverse and considerably lower income. The children I teach are all eager to learn and are enthusiastic. My classroom is comprised of children who are learning English and also with children who have different disabilities.
I have found that the best way to teach all early childhood students is through hands-on experiences like making and baking bread. Hands-on baking activities help children develop confidence in their abilities. For example, they will learn to follow directions and use thinking skills to problem solve.
In Pre-K, we are always working on fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. We will work on these skills when the children grind wheat, beat, crack, mash, knead, squeeze, spread, and mix. By following a recipe, the children will organize ingredients, follow a sequence, and carry out directions.
My Project
I am interested in having a baker named "Professor Bread" visit my Pre-K classroom and make bread with my youngsters. My little ones will learn to follow recipes and measure ingredients. They will also have the unique opportunity of grinding wheat into flour and make butter from scratch. They will also be introduced to rolling pins, whisks, measuring spoons, measuring bowls, and pans.
For many of the children, this may be their first experience using these kitchen utensils. The children will enjoy these experiences and they will have so many wonderful memories. In Pre-K, we will tie literature on baking and bread with a follow up art project. This lesson on baking will incorporate literacy, math, social studies and science all at the same time. Research has shown that a child's first three years is critical for the development of language, attention span, social skills, and problem solving capabilities!
It's such a satisfying experience to bake and is so well suited to children as they naturally love to mix, knead, and of course, watch dough rise as it bakes.
Some of the best childhood memories are born in the kitchen. This is an experience that is rapidly disappearing in our modern society. Please consider giving this opportunity to my class of preschoolers, it would be a real "gift." Let them discover why it's said, "Nothing is tastier than fresh bread."
