This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach high school students with exceptionalities in the Birmingham City School district. These students are from the ages of 14-21. As a product of this system, daily I strive to provide my students with the heartfelt dedication that I feel they need and deserve. These students enter high school lacking basic reading and math skills, and without a realistic goal of what they want to do after they leave high school. My transition class is designed to increase their real-world knowledge and skills in order for them to one day be productive adults after graduating from high school.
My Project
The items that I have selected would greatly benefit my classroom. I am faced with the task of providing instruction on transition skills, but have no materials to do so. I have had to be creative over the years, but sometimes my time and energy is just nonexistent. I am heartbroken at the fact that many other programs are fully funded in my district, but special education is often overlooked. These materials would give my students the necessary skills and knowledge that they desperately need to have a fighting chance at a normal life after graduation. There's nothing like seeing a former student making an honest living at a job that most people would look down upon. However, I teach my students the importance of EVERY job and sincerely want them to be successful when they leave my class in whatever path they choose in life.
