My Students

Each day the students wait longingly for their turn on the school provided computers to have a chance on a learning game but can become disappointed when the computers are being used for another activity like testing and therefore do not get to play.

My students are second graders at a Title 1 school who hold big dreams but are dealt precious few resources.

They are no strangers to hardships and yet still come to school with optimism and smiles. Despite their circumstances, my students are familiar with some technology and for several of them, can actually shine in their knowledge of them. They usually know someone who has an iPad or have used a parents phone to play learning games on and are extremely successful with them showing that they ARE very smart children!

My Project

My students have computers in the room that the school provided and they are used for reading tests as well as writing but unfortunately this results in little time or use for learning games. During our Language portion of the day I would love to be able to set up an area for students to use iPad's and play uploaded learning games on to help promote their learning while also having fun. The students would benefit from the ease in which to access the game as well as get a chance with a piece of technology they often are not privileged to have. My ESOL students along with lower level learners would be able to play games discretely that would help their vocabulary without others seeing the screen and making remarks on the game they are playing. The devices would also allow the students to work in a quiet corner of the room where they can focus away from others that are doing other work.

The donation of the iPad's would open many new possibilities for the students in my room that need it the most.

The discretion and learning opportunities it can provide would really help many students in my room flourish as learners and help them not feel embarrassed by their learning difficulties or barriers.
