My Students

"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." ~John Dewey~ Life, as we know it, has changed significantly over the last few decades. Our world has become increasingly infused with technology. We need to use education to prepare our students for this adventure called Life.

My enthusiastic fourth and fifth grade students attend a K-8 school on a military base.

Like all children, they are intensely curious about the world and how it works. Being the children of military personnel provides my students with unique challenges and wonderful resiliency. They are extremely appreciative and treasure the joy of learning.

My Project

What are Cubelets? They are interactive cubes that can be snapped together in many different combinations. Each combination creates a robot that responds uniquely to its environment and other Cubelets, i.e. sensing and responding to movement, light, sound, and temperature. What a wonderful, play-based introduction to robotics! My students would not only learn about robotics, but would also explore design, logical thinking, engineering, mechanics, and electrical circuits. These activities would require collaborative group work that would build the essential skills of leadership and communication.

Bringing this project to life in our school will create an opportunity for my students to apply their math, logical reasoning, and higher order skills to the real world with fun, motivating activities.
