This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When my daughter was young, she had the chance to spend time on a farm and care for animals. I grew up in a city but also had the chance to spend a lot of time on a farm. I believe those experiences shape your life.
My students attend an urban public school in Maryland.
These fourth-graders are being taught science daily for the first time. Most of them have not had the opportunity to explore nature and many of them are a little afraid of the outside world. My classroom is full of kids that are filled with curiosity but the majority of their experiences with nature are through a screen.
My Project
Raising butterflies and chickens will give my students the chance to see nature in action. It is one thing to read about the stages of development and it is another to actually see a chick hatch. These classroom kits will allow me to provide this experience for my class this year and for years to come.
Help give these kids the chance to see nature first-hand.
I think the first step in developing individuals who care about the environment is hands-on experiences with the world around them--maybe then they will work to save it.
