Living Butterflies In The Classroom

My students need caterpillars to watch grow into butterflies, a set of butterfly life cycle stamps, and a life cycles theme kit.

I am a first grade teacher and teach a variety of subject matter from reading/math to science and social studies. The school that I teach in is a Title I school whose students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, many of whom do not speak English at home. These elementary students also tend to come from single parent homes, have grandparents raising them or in financial need.

I would love to bring more science into my classroom, but find it very hard to do so when the funds are not available to do so, our school budget this year was cut drastically. As a teacher I spend a lot of my own money buying basic supplies (crayons, paper, pencils, glue sticks) and do not have the funds to buy science kits for students to use and learn from.

I would love to teach my students more about butterflies. Watching butterflies hatch teaches students about nature, a life cycle of an insect, and the students get to see first hand (up close and personal) how a caterpillar changes into a beautiful butterfly. The resources needed for this project are caterpillar larvae, life cycle theme kit and life cycle stamps. I would like enough caterpillar larvae for about 20 students that it makes this learning experience more on a personal level by allowing the students to have their very own.

The main reason I am asking for these items is that many of my students would not get to experience these types of experiments/activities outside of the classroom. So as a teacher I feel that it is my duty to bring experiences into the classroom to help my students learn, understand and experience things that are around them.
