My Students

My ESL students need colorful, high interest, reading materials that they can take home. Last year I found the perfect magazine for them - National Geographic Explorer. I brought in a couple of copies that my own children were given by the PTO at their school, and my students LOVED them!

My students generally like to read, but when they go to the library by themselves they probably wouldn't choose non-fiction material like this that will help expand their vocabulary and their general knowledge.

We are lucky enough to have a fairly well stocked school library, but my goal is to give the kids as much reading material as possible to take home that they can keep for their own.

My Project

Just like the 'real' National Geographic magazine, the National Geographic Explorer magazines are full of gorgeous photos and high interest stories. Unlike the National Geographic Kids magazines, they contain no advertising! They provide a great way for me to help my students learn the vocabulary they need for their science and social studies classes. There are interactive whiteboard materials that accompany them that give the kids another way of reviewing the stories.

The small number of copies of these magazines that I have asked for should last me several years as my largest group of English language learners this year is 4.

Even when I let the students take their magazines home after we've worked on them in class, I will have some left for next year, and even the year after that! I will keep 4 of each edition to continue to use as a 'classroom set' so future students will benefit from this gift too because very few of the articles will 'date'.
