Lively Literacy Learners

My students need engaging literacy center activities, tins, and cards to help to close the achievement gap in reading and language arts.

My Students

Each day, my friends come into a morning meeting. This is where we set the tone for a successful day of learning. I want all of scholars to master the kindergarten common core literacy standards by the end of the year. My biggest challenge, is providing hands on engaging activities for my scholars.

My scholars come from a variety of neighborhoods in Cleveland.

Currently many of them are staying in shelters or with extended family members. My scholars come in each day hungry for breakfast and lunch and excited to learn. In a typical day, they rotate through a variety of small group hands on learning centers. Our classroom has jobs and responsibilities to help provide ownership of behavior and of learning. Each child brings a unique personality to our classroom family. We work together to create an atmosphere of success!

My Project

These materials will be used to engage my scholars in exciting hands on literacy centers each day. I will use the Alphabet and Phonemic Activity tins to work in small groups with my scholars. The Phonemic and Alphabet Activity tins will help students to identify their letters and sounds. Each child will have opportunities to practice writing their letters with the Write and Wipe Alphabet Practice card set. The set of Classroom Magnetic letters will be used to spell simple words in small groups with scholars. The Beginning Sounds Instant Learning Center will be used to help students isolate and identify the beginning sounds in words. These activities will help my scholars build a foundation before they learn to read this year.

This project gives my scholars an opportunity to use a variety of fun and exciting learning activities to help them acquire the basic skills of literacy.

The children will be able to use new and colorful manipulatives to assist them in their learning. These activities will be used in small groups to help promote social skills and to help them master the foundational skills of literacy in kindergarten. Having these materials will prepare my scholars for first grade.
