This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students hate reading; let's change that! I work with a group of 14 students in the 6th grade in a reading intervention class. They all have felt like reading is boring, or is something they are bad at, don't relate to, or doesn't help them. Our school is a small Title I middle school in New York City that has high English language learner, students with special needs populations. We provide students with social-emotional learning such as mindful breathing, inquiry-based learning, and advisory.
My Project
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, my students are now digging into a series of graphic novels that are actually capturing their interest in reading! Students have been ecstatically paging through Persepolis, March, and Drama. They are excited by plots that take them to different cultures and are ecstatic about characters that reflect their experiences.
Their ferocious reading means we need new books for the new year.
Students and I discussed more genres and titles that will continue to grow their love of reading. These books will give students the opportunity to engage in literacy in ways that matter to them and bring them joy.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
