My Students

Biology is a required subject. IB Biology and IB Environmental Systems and Societies are elective advanced field science courses. We live in the most amazing place, the Oregon Coast. Though my students may not be financially rich, our place is very rich with natural wonders.

I try to motivate students by engaging with the world around them.

Some have never even looked around the outside world!

They love getting outside and are generally excited about learning science and the natural world we live in. Students are more motivated when I combine hands-on science learning and apply it to real-world concepts. I love project-based learning and STEM projects to get them engaged.

My Project

Having aquariums in the classroom is a highly engaging STEM project, but unfortunately, very expensive. Over the winter break, I set up 17 aquarium tanks for my Environmental Science students.

By learning how to balance and care for their aquatic ecosystem, they are learning about different biological, chemical and physiological cycles.

Each group will decide what goes in their tank, but these will all be freshwater ecosystems. The plants requesting in this project will help oxygenate their ecosystems and provide habitat and hiding places for the fish and snails. They will also have to maintain plant health by adding limited nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen.
