My students need a wide variety of texts to choose from since they go from very low reading levels to very high reading levels, such as the kindergarten level library and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
My students (AKA kiddos) come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some come with every school supply they could use for 2 school years and some come with nothing. Many come with something in between. Some live with mom, some live with dad, some live with grandma, some live with many siblings, and some live with none. I also have a student who is an English language learner. These kids come from all walks of life and some have experienced more in their 7 years than I have in my 28. With that being said, we have daily struggles emotionally, intellectually, and physically.
I have one of the most unique groups of kiddos!
They are resilient and are always wanting to make things better. They are so caring! Whenever there is a new student, the outpouring of help and gifts from them is tremendous! I can't even count the number of hugs and gifts I get a day. Even though we have only been together about 3 months, they have grown so much in every subject. They make it all worth it.
I had my kiddos take a reading interest survey, which is how I was able to pinpoint some of the specific titles on my list to add to my library. (Hopefully!) The thing that struck me the most on the survey (and what I have been seeing with empty buckets on my library shelves) was that I do not have enough books in my library to keep up with my students' needs. My poor kiddos that require kindergarten and first grade leveled books don't have nearly enough books to keep them interested or even occupied during our reading workshop!
My kiddos are always interested in and LOVE new and different reading materials!
I know that they would grow so much more in their reading if they had the right resources and I would love for them to have that opportunity. They would also be more engaged during reading workshop because they would have more options for books to read. I can already see the excitement in their faces...
