My Students
My students are introductory and advanced placement physics students in a public high school. They are motivated students who have demonstrated learning gains when using technology to collect data simultaneously while observing motion. Students often comment on their engagement as a result of the lab and hands-on activities we have designed for them. These activities are part of a higher order thinking approach that encourages students to observe and explain the relationships they observe as part of technology rich curriculum.
My Project
We need two classroom sets (16 sets) of the Vernier Motion Encoder Carts. These carts offer amazing precision and reliability of live motion measurements. We have piloted the use of the high tech IR encoder carts to teach students about work and energy. We have developed a curricular suite centered around the use of these carts. Students can collect data live on their own device while they observe motion using free and powerful data analysis software. Students can then comment on the type of motion they observe as well as changes in energy. The setups are very student-friendly. Other data collection instruments are very buggy and inaccurate.
Physics students have demonstrated outstanding engagement and improved comprehension of work and energy concepts while using the IR motion encoder carts to collect live, accurate motion data.
These setups are unique and unavailable from other vendors.
