This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm changing the world one day at a time. I teach.

My students are incredible, brave, charismatic English Language Learners (ELLs) from all over the world.

Many of my students have endured nightmarish journeys to be here, in search for a better life. When these children show up at school on the first day, many are frightened and completely shell-shocked. Some were raised in the mountains with no running water. This is a far cry from their new home in North Carolina. These children, their safety, their development, become my responsibility the moment they show up at school ready to learn. It is my job to provide them with the best education possible and nurture their unbelievable potential while providing language support through content area instruction to catch them up with their peers.

My Project

These materials offer my ELLs an opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills, while developing English. All my lessons target the 4 language domains- reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The students will build, read, and write sight words by stringing together lowercase letters (to build the words). Through listening and speaking, the alphabet tubs will help teach the alphabet, vocabulary, and initial letter sounds. The Match Me ABC game will encourage speaking while learning letter sounds and vocabulary. Students will use dry erase boards and markers during whole group lessons for interactive writing. The class library will be stored in the set of 6 book bins. Storyteller's box will provide support as students build more detailed sentences in speaking and writing. The five senses learning center will help the children express thoughts using five common sentence stems - I taste-, I feel-, I hear-, I see-, I smell-.

It is my hope to get my students on grade level in reading by the end of the year.

Literacy is one of the most telling factors influencing graduation rates. My students are young - only 6 and 7 years old. Strengthening these skills now will impact the rest of their life. They deserve every opportunity. We can do it! We can get there!
