My Students
Wow! This is my second year at my new school teaching first graders and I am finally loving these tiny people! First grade was a little of a challenge last year starting a brand new grade in a brand new school. This year I feel like I am able to use what worked from last year and know what I need to chance to become a better teacher.
My goal is for my students to grow into lifelong learners having fun at the same time!
Not only do I teach my kids the state standards but I also teach them skills they need to know to become good people.
My students come from all different backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. Some live in the neighborhood but others are bussed in from all over the county. Their educational backgrounds are all different and I am prepared for this.
My Project
My students needs personal whiteboards with lines. In first grade we do a lot of work on the carpet and I use a lot of informal assessments to see how my students are progressing. The students have been using the same personal white boards for the past 8 years I have been teaching and I'm sure the teacher before me used them for years also. The white part is peeling off, some are so dirty they will barely erase anymore and I don't think it's fair to have my students use these old supplies. We use these personal whiteboards in every subject all day, every day.
How can students learn how to write if they don't have the proper supplies?
A big part of first grade is teaching the students how to write and form their letters correctly. Not too long ago I was thinking to myself, how are these kids ever going to remember how to form their letters and write nicely if half the time they are writing on whiteboards with no lines! I feel to give my students the best education I can they need to have personal whiteboards with lines so they are practicing the skills they need to learn correctly all throughout the day.
