My Project
Students come to school to learn, but they also come to school to feel loved and safe. It is important that students learn how to safely and appropriately understand their manage their emotions.
The items requested will help create a calming space for students in my first grade classroom.
The Little Spot books will be used as teaching materials to teach and model how to identify their own emotions. The calming pillow will give the students a safe and comfortable space to regulate their emotions, regain their composure, and be able to successfully return to the classroom’s activities. The plush toys, sensory bottles, squishy balls, sensory maze toys, and fidget toys will be stored in the storage basket. These items will be available to students to use as tools to calm down and manage emotions by providing them a safe, but physical outlet for their emotions. The koala breathing pal provides students with guided breathing exercises to help them calm down and relax. The timer will provide all students with equal access to the calming corner, help students with time management, and remind students of their ultimate goal of being able to calmly and safely return to the classroom's activities.
This calming space will teach students how to calmly manage their emotions and overcome challenges. It will also help lessen disruptions to the classroom environment. The calming space in our classroom helps to develop a well-rounded student who knows that it’s okay to feel their feelings and express their emotions.
