Little Spots, Big Feelings: SEL Support for Special Learners

My Project

In my elementary school counseling program, I support amazing students in special education who are working hard to understand their feelings, build coping skills, and make positive choices. My students benefit from visual, hands-on materials that make abstract concepts - like calming down or thinking before acting - more concrete and accessible. This project includes resources that are designed specifically with young learners and diverse needs in mind: the A Little Spot book series helps students label and understand emotions through engaging stories and clear visuals; the Coping Skills Game teaches practical strategies in a fun, interactive way; the Mindfulness Activity Photo Cards provide real-life imagery for calming exercises; and the Making Good Choices Puzzle allows students to practice decision-making with tangible pieces.

These tools will help me create meaningful, differentiated counseling sessions where students can learn through play, discussion, and visual support.

Whether we’re piecing together good choices or reading about how a “Little Spot” of boredom feels, these materials will help my students feel seen, supported, and successful.
