The materials for this project will benefit students by providing a variety of hands-on materials for science lessons, stations, and experiments. We will uncover science exploration throughout multiple units of study. We begin by teaching the foundations of science. Next, we explore space, learning all about our solar system. The Sun: Patterns of Day and Night lesson provides hands-on engagement of how the sun and Earth work together to create day and night. The flashlights represent the sun’s light. The students benefit by observing and describing patterns of day and night. In the Moon: Craters lesson, students will create a moon model using Play-Doh. Various materials will be used to make craters on their moon. Our goal is to learn why the moon has craters. In addition, students explore units of light and sound! Stations benefit students with materials used to understand how the sun affects our lives on earth. With the Properties of Matter station, students will read the clues that describe the properties of the scientific item in the bag. They study the state of matter, the size, color, weight, shape, texture, and temperature and write their findings in their booklet. This project will strengthen their understanding of science. It will instill curiosity, provide hands-on materials for exploration, and help them discover a love of science in first grade!
