Early Intervention is a key element in order to provide children deemed at risk with the same opportunities that their peers have access to. By providing programs to preschool and prekindergarten age children, all children will have the opportunity to experience academic and social experiences that will provide them a foundation for lifelong learning. For children with special needs, the opportunity for positive school experiences is all the more important.
My classroom consists of children with special needs, ages 3 to 5, with a variety of diagnoses.
My students face challenges in learning, social skills, and sensory processing. Considering that my classroom is part of a large, urban school district, tax dollars are stretched which makes it increasingly difficult to provide tools to meet their unique needs.
My Project
My students love stories, especially stories from Pete the Cat, No David, and There Was an Old Lady series. They enjoy the repetition, the funny storyline, and ask to hear them over and over again.
My students have special needs and need constant exposure to stories they enjoy and that will hold their attention.
I usually get their favorite stories from the library, however, they are not always available.
Through funding my project, I will be able to have copies of my student's favorite stories to keep in the classroom. I plan on making story props to go along with each book to further their engagement as well. As we enjoy each story, I hope to see their love of reading soar to new heights!
