Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is made up of 20 amazing learners. They come to class ready to learn despite the obstacles they face prior to stepping foot in the classroom. We are a Title I school and almost all of my students are English Language Learners. My students love coming to school because I make learning fun. My students work hard each and every day. Unfortunately, they need supplies that I can’t provide on my own. This includes tools that can help build their phonological/phonemic awareness.
My Project
Research shows that explicit instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness is critical for learning to read. In a nutshell, this is the ability to hear and orally manipulate sounds. Rhyming, identifying the first sound of a word, and saying each sound one hears in a word (segmenting) are some examples of these skills. Students with developed phonological and phonemic awareness have much better success in learning to read. The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program provides daily, systematic practice, and it would benefit my students greatly. As students develop these skills, they are ready to move on to phonics instruction, or using print to sound out words. The Lakeshore phonics literacy tools I am requesting will help me work with small groups who are ready for that next step. It will also help reinforce skills I have taught in phonics.
These literacy items will be used daily in my classroom to help me build strong first grade readers.
Your generous donation will directly help me reach each student at their level with practice in the skills they need-- whether it is foundational phonemic and phonological awareness skills, or hands-on phonics practice.
