Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Come back, Jack!" One of the first stories in the 2nd grade anthology is about a girl whose brother crawls into a book. She crawls in after him, and they find an adventure therein. My students need their own books, not just an anthology of stories, so they can find an adventure, too!
My students live in a low-income area, and though their parents are hard working, access to literature is limited.
The kids love reading, but their neighborhood lacks a local library. Literature circles are a way for kids to have their own book, and to read it from start to finish.
My Project
Participating in literature circles inspires my students' imaginations. Sets of books allow us read in groups, supporting one another at the instructional level. The kids will read rich vocabulary in a guided setting. They will be asked to think critically, and to connect to the literature. They will read, discuss, and write about the adventures in their own book.
Starting and finishing your own book is motivating and empowering.
It is satisfying to know that you read the "whole book". Anthologies are useful classroom resources, but one size does not fit all. With sets of leveled readers, my students will find their own adventure in a book at their level. It is exciting to finish a book, and even more thrilling to dive into a new one!
