My inner city classroom is comprised of approximately 25 students from low socio-economic backgrounds. A large percentage of my students' families are unable to provide their children with basic daily necessities. These boys and girls come to school hungry, tired, and without clean clothes, bookbags, school supplies, etc.
It amazes me that despite their home environment and family circumstances my students come to school each morning eager to be there and learn.
School is a safe place for them and I want to do everything possible to create a positive, comfortable, and engaging environment for them to thrive in.
My Project
These materials will help our students create the products they need to start their own business. Every year our second graders take part in a school wide project called "Mini Society". The point of the project is to teach our students about entrepreneurship. Through this project, they learn about wants and needs, goods and services, saving and spending money. Once we have taught the series of lessons that go along with the project the students then work together to create a name for their business as well design and name their currency.
Our little entrepreneurs work on their business project for approximately 8 weeks.
The culmination of this project becomes a school wide sale in which the students run their business for the entire school day. The goal is to make the largest profit in the whole second grade after paying their "bills". The student who reaches this goal is then awarded "the key to the city".
