Welcome to our Kindergarten! It is a safe, secure place where children explore, learn and discover on a daily basis. My children build towers, play with babies, sing songs, role play, and play games. While it all looks fun, they are actually learning reading, writing and math skills!
An F-5 tornado recently disrupted the lives of everyone in our city.
Although my school was not damaged, many of my children no longer feel safe and secure. They are suffering from the devastation that surrounds them. Many of them had family members and friends who were injured or lost homes. Many parents no longer have jobs as businesses were destroyed. The destruction is everywhere.
Most of my Kindergarten children are from families of poverty, as 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. We even send home snack backpacks with many children to insure they have food to eat during the weekends. My classroom is the one place a child feels safe, secure and unconditionally loved!
My Project
Most of my students have had no preschool or prior learning experience. They do not have a background rich with books and learning. I must provide them a wide variety of learning tools. The writing tools, dough and stampers, science folders and other materials I am requesting will enrich the centers that I have in my room. These materials are all developmentally appropriate for 5 year old children to give them practice for mastering our curriculum objectives.
After the tornado, I visited many of the homes of my students to determine their needs and safety.
After seeing the conditions in which my children live, I am more convinced than ever that a good education is the only chance my children have of escaping the cycle of poverty. I am more determined than ever to provide a safe, caring and loving classroom that offers a literacy rich environment. Please help provide these materials so that my children have a chance to succeed in school.
