This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Last year, I began a music program at my elementary school in New Orleans East. Now, in our second year, the program serves 550 students from PreK - 4th grade! In addition to daily general music classes, I also have a drumline and musical theatre group that includes 5th graders as well.
The passion my students have for learning and performing music is unmatched.
My kids come to class everyday ready to rock. We learn music theory, play a variety of percussion instruments and recorders; as well as learn how to sing and dance! I'm so inspired by their enthusiasm, energy and raw talent.
Music is the heartbeat of New Orleans and my students are the next torch bearers of that legacy. I want to do everything I can to give them the skills and experiences they need to celebrate their culture and pass on the musical traditions of our great city.
My Project
I want to take my music program to the next level! In my general music classes, that means getting xylophones. Xylophones will help my students to better read and play music, as well as develop their ear and composition skills. These instruments will be played by all students kindergarten to 4th grade.
The drumline is compromised of our school's top musicians.
We have recently begun marching season for Mardi Gras and have two big parades coming up. Currently, we don't have any proper tenor drum mallets and all of our marching straps are on their last legs. We’ve been using the bottom of snare sticks, which are breaking the tenor drum heads, and taped up glockenspiel mallets. These resources would ensure that we have everything we need to be successful.
Thank you so much for considering to help my kids and our growing music program!
