Little Mozarts From the Big City

My project needs music CDs and maracas to enhance our music program.

The No Child Left Behind law recognizes the arts as one of 10 core subjects, but it does not include arts testing in its requirements of public schools. Therefore, in my opinion, there is not a significant emphasis placed on the arts curriculum. In schools, less money is spent on the arts and teachers are scrambling to find a way to teach the arts effectively. Children need an access to arts programs, particularly those who have trouble engaging in other key subjects, such as math, science or reading. Exposing children to the arts may also uncover a child's hidden talent. Parents can encourage their children to be artistic through after school programs and at-home learning, though these activities do not replace the sequential, structured curriculum that schools can provide. Also, parents in the school that I am teaching in cannot afford in many cases after school programs in the arts and any other class whether it be piano or Tae Kwan Do. I teach 18 wonderful pre-kindergarten students in a large urban New York City school. I am in need of music CDs and musical instruments to enhance our music program. The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world. Music gives young children joy and is a fundamental and irreplaceable part of a child's development. Please consider funding my proposal for music materials that will be used for many years to come by hundreds of children.
