Help me give my students a variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) materials to help increase thinking, problem solving, and scientific development in their young minds as they succeed in the future.
I don’t get it, what are you doing, and why is this important are common questions in a student’s mind. Young children are most engaged when exposed to hands-on, meaningful experiences; however, it is virtually impossible to engage small children when they are not clearly engaged or focused on the lesson especially in math and science. I teach a group of 20 five and six year old kindergarten students in an inclusion class in a Title I school. Many of the students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and receive free or reduced lunch. These children come to me from a variety of backgrounds and home environments. It is important to me that my students improve their academic skills, but I also want them to gain a love for learning at school. I want them to be exposed to fun, exciting learning every day so they go home and say "I am learning so much. I can't wait to go back to school tomorrow!" Because they are so young, they need items that they can see, touch, and manipulate in a variety of ways while continuing to learn.
My Project
The STEM materials that I am requesting will help students solve real world problems in a hands-on way, but they will also learn so much more! There is a variety of materials that my students can use in whole group, small groups, partners, and even individually as a learning tools! This will increase their thinking skills, problem solving, and scientific development. They can use these resources to reinforce the skills that have been taught in reading, math, and science and have multiple types of materials close at hand to explore solutions to problems and questions in all subjects. The small magnetic sentence strip pockets will allow for multiple students to work at the board at one time and the dry erase blueprints will allow for students to explore their designs before testing their ideas. The STEM based materials will help my students learn to solve real world problems in a creative way. This is vital to success later in life! My students often struggle with basic academic skills because they have never had the experience prior to coming to school. Math and science provide fundamental skills to succeed in other subject areas. These materials will provide math and science experiences for every one of my students which will improve academics across the curriculum. They will be able to explore solutions to problems and LEARN! This project will benefit my students this year and in the future. It will help them learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in a fun, interactive, hands-on way that many of them would never have access to in their everyday lives. Many only have these experiences in my classroom. My students deserve the best, and I want to provide that for them. Please help me give these young minds a foundation for early learning.
