My Project
Math manipulatives make it easy for every child to meet early math standards! Manipulatives extend and reinforce important math concepts. I teach PreK in a large, urban school in the Bronx. I am in need of various different manipulatives to help strengthen my students' understanding of key concepts. My students come from low-income families and many are learning English for the first time. I would love to have manipulatives that would help the children learn counting and ordering of objects. Lakeshore has a manipulative called My First Sorting Bears. You get 24 chubby bears in 2 different sizes and 4 bright colors…plus 8 corresponding activity cards. The children would just place the bears right on the cards to sort each one by size and color. I am also requesting a button sorting box that comes with 24 buttons in 3 shapes and 4 colors. This sorting box gives hands-on experience with color, shape, size, and fine motor control. I am also requesting a ladybug number match game. The children would be able to practice counting and match numbers to quantities! Kids just count the dots on a ladybug—then find the leaf with the matching numeral from 1 to 10. Lastly, I need magnetic shelves to place math board books in. These manipulatives would give the children hands-on practice to grasp early math concepts.
These materials will also sharpen necessary beginning math skills such as number recognition, counting, estimation, problem-solving, and basic math operations.
