Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Our low-income Bronx community has many young members who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, communication and cognitive delays, with other comorbid developmental delays such as sensory processing disorder, and challenges with executive functioning. We would like to create an interactive light wall for community children to engage with when they attend specialized therapy programs with their families on the weekend. Currently, community members wait for their session in a room with very limited stimulation, decreasing childrens' opportunities to engage with their environment and find meaningful connections with each other and family members.

The interactive light and bubble wall are intended to promote calmness while increasing focus and engagement with each other and the materials.

The bubble wall is intended to support mental health through providing mindful and calming moments, which can truly impact a misunderstood delayed child as well as their caregiver. The touch lights are intended to bring joy through social interactions as well as bring happiness through surprise as youngsters discover their role in simple cause and effect relationships.

All too often, families of special needs children are left tired, frustrated, and feeling forgotten. I feel that by providing these community members with a unique sensory experience, they may have opportunity to witness and take part in their children's joy. Our neighborhood does not have many resources or funding to support the high needs of our young children with disabilities and it is my belief that this wall may offer a ray of light on someone's dark day.
