Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergarten students are eager, hopeful, and capable learners. They are curious, imaginative, problem solvers, and goal oriented. Many are first generation English language learners with big dreams of achieving college degrees and prosperous careers.
My students are hardworking, driven, open-minded, role models, and inspirations to all who chase the 'American Dream.'
Kindergarten is where their paths to success begin, and they are already making their families and community proud by learning and achieving in a second language, and contributing positively to their communities.
My Project
Having taught the upper grades most recently, I have minimal materials for my little lectors. Building a library of appropriate texts is a high priority now that they have started decoding words independently.
Our district provided texts are not enough to foster confidence in literacy and a love for reading and writing.
Literacy instruction is the foundation for all other instruction--we need the materials for the primary kiddos! Literacy skills and enjoyment develop at an early age. Eliminating the stigmas of literacy with emerging readers is so important for their success in reading and writing.
The materials we need will be available in independent work centers where students can manipulate and explore words and sounds before participating in guided reading. Books will be available in our classroom library and centers for independent, partner, and guided reading.
With this variety of texts and materials, the more engaged and growing we will find our little learners.
