Little Learners Want to Get to Their “Hands-On” Language!
My students need an iPad to access educational apps that will supplement therapy and introduce interactive approaches to learning to aid them in achieving their speech, language and literacy goals!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Pesce's classroom raised $597

My Students
I am a Speech Therapist at a Special-Education Elementary School. I mostly work with students with Autism ranging in age from kindergarten to 6th grade. Each and every one of them has a unique personality, learning style and set of interests and require varying levels of support in and out of the therapy room.
Although my students fill my life with so much love and cheer, many of them come from low-socioeconomic status households, which truly breaks my heart.
My students may learn and interact in ways that are different from how a "typical" child would, but in so many ways they are the same. They love music and dancing. They love laughing and playing games. They need attention and praise just as any other child does. And most importantly, they deserve to be given every opportunity and tool to succeed just as any other child would.
My students are faced with many challenges. However, with the help of myself and our classroom teams, they break through walls every day. If I could only use one word to describe my students, it would definitely be inspirational.
My Project
I believe the integration of an iPad into our therapy sessions will greatly & positively affect my students and aid them in not only reaching but exceeding their reading, writing, speech and language goals. Most of us can no longer imagine life without technology, but for the majority of my students, resources such as an iPad are simply not as accessible to them as many come from low socioeconomic status households. Technology is a huge part of our world and as it advances further I do not want to see my students lose out on its many benefits because of their financial situations.
As a supplement to traditional speech therapy, I believe integrating apps that are carefully created by doctors, speech therapists, teachers and related professionals alike to target speech, language, and literacy goals will introduce many opportunities for my students to interact, grow and learn in ways they never have before.
In addition to familiarizing and exposing my students to technology, access to these specially designed apps will make reading, answering "wh" questions, speech production, building vocabulary and sentences, and many more pillars of learning, fun and interactive. And as we all know, there's no better way to get kids more excited about and more receptive to learning than to make it fun, make it an experience and to get them involved in their own success.
I want nothing more than for my students to succeed and in a world that is constantly advancing. I truly believe integrating an iPad and educational apps into their therapy will immensely aid them in achieving their reading, writing and speech goals!
