it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had to ask a neighbor or a co-worker for something? This is my story. The math manipulatives in my classroom are so old and incomplete that I constantly have to borrow materials from other teachers to be able to provide hands-on learning to my kindergarten students.
The students that attend my school come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds.
Most of their parents do not have the means to provide them with enrichment experiences or materials at home, so this duty is left up to our community schools. Unfortunately, our classrooms are not always equipped with the proper materials. Although their tiny little hands are limited by the hardships faced by their families, they come to school with their best smile and determination to succeed.
My Project
My number one priority for this project, is to provide my students with hands-on learning materials since it is the best way to teach five and six year olds. I have requested a measurement center that includes weights, a big sturdy balance, a liquid measurement kit and a kid friendly measuring tape that will enable my students to visualize actual measurements such as those of dinosaurs. The double-sided counters and problem solving kits will not only be great for small group instruction, but also to form a center for independent practice. I also requested a magnetic teaching clock plus write and wipe student clocks that will make learning time a little more comprehensible at this age. I am very excited about the number line activity chart that I requested that will provide an alternative strategy to teach addition and subtraction. I also requested sorting trays and geometric shapes. All of these materials will facilitate the hands-on learning for my students so they can succeed.
It is in the news everyday, the United States lags behind in Science and Mathematics compared to other countries around the world.
I invite you to help me in making a difference. With your donations, you will be supporting the initiative to advance our students in these subject areas. Children at this age learn through hands-on activities that give them an opportunity to explore and discover. The materials that I have requested will indeed meet this objective. Please help me get them ready!
