Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a K-5 elementary school in a low-income, urban community. Our school has a diverse ethnic population, most of whom are English language learners. Our student population is over two thousand.
I teach visual arts to 750 students.
95% are English language learners. I teach general ed, gifted, and special needs students. They love art because they can express themselves without having to struggle with words. My students are eager to learn, and they love to create. They are bright, talented, and artistic, and they never cease to amaze me.
My Project
My kindergarteners are learning to use and manipulate art materials while developing fine motor skills. It's fun to watch them use these materials for the first time and to see what they create. The sensory dough is fun to use, and it's a great way to help children develop fine motor and bilateral coordination skills! The yarn lace is for stringing beads and cut straws and for lacing cards, excellent activities for improving hand-eye coordination and concentration. The messy mats will help keep us clean as we work. My students will learn to use scissors as they work on a collage unit. The papers I am requesting will be used in making our collages.
In the words of Alexander Calder, "Above all, art should be fun."
