Little Hands and Sensory Play

Help me give my students fun sensory materials to enhance multisensory learning and play.

My Project

Children in the Early Childhood setting learn through hands-on opportunities and play. As an integrated preschool teacher I aim to teach the whole child and provide them with the necessary experiences they need to grow and develop in all domains. Multisensory learning is a research-based approach that provides students of all abilities access to content. This type of sensory play allows children to engage all their senses to explore various learning concepts through tactile, hands-on play.

Opportunities to engage in multisensory learning create dynamic neuropathways in the brain, providing children with enhanced memory, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

Sensory play also promotes language as children engage with different textures and describe what they are experiencing. It enhances creativity by providing open-ended play, thus increasing social skills as children navigate turn-taking and cooperative play. Sensory play also provides a calming moment for students who experience dysregulation during the school day.

In my classroom, students explore various thematic units each month. I love to provide them with sensory opportunities like play-doh, sand, or water to further explore ideas about ocean animals, insects, weather, and more. We have used sand to build castles and discuss what we need to build a sturdy structure. We have used play-doh to work on fine motor and pre-writing skills but pinching and poking objects out of the dough. This develops the hand strength necessary to hold a writing utensil or open and close scissors. We have also used shaving cream to practice writing our letters and numbers and even drawing shapes!

The goal of my project is to increase my inventory for my sensory center; to provide my students with more variety, and enhance their multisensory learning.
