My Students
Our early childhood school is now in its 14th year serving the community. In our pre-K class, that means over 200 students have come and gone from this classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after-school programs, and summer camp.
Families send their precious children to our class every day for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.
Our families are working-class parents who often work long hours to provide for their children.
There is nothing more rewarding for a teacher than connecting with the students and the families they serve on an emotional level. I am very fortunate to be able to teach in the very same community I grew up in.
I see much of my younger self in my students and see the similarities between my own parents and their parents. The stories, experiences, culture, food, and beliefs their families share have a lot in common with my own family.
My Project
The gift of literacy is a gift that sparks an endless cycle of giving. It takes a village to raise a child and our school hopes to take the initiative to take an active role in helping, not only the families in our school, but the families all over out community to become readers.
We always push our families to read to their students, never taking into consideration if they have access to books or not.
It's easy to recommend that they visit the public library, however, since the pandemic, access to our local library has been off limits as it was set up for a vaccine site and will now be going under renovations to upgrade the air system. The local library served many people and unfortunately, it has been taken out of commission for the time being. A Little Free Library is needed now more than ever in our community. The success of our first Little Free library project has made me realize that more is needed. I hope to bring more free libraries in our community but will require your support.
My goal is to get more books into the hands of the children in the community, the same community I grew up in, which holds a very special place in my heart. If there is a family that didn't have access to books before and is now able to take home books for their child, this project will be a huge success. Your support will go towards building a community that will appreciate the gift of literacy, and in the long run, it will pay off greatly.
