My Students

Students at our academy are challenged not only with rigorous academics, but introspective social-emotional learning. Through drama and literature, these students gain useful skills to be successful in life outside the classroom. 100% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

The world of COVID-19 has slightly altered my job as a theatre educator- not only do I teach a performing art as social-emotional learning, but several forms of English as well! My students have a variety of reading levels- they range from fifth grade up to a collegiate level. I have slowly built a classroom library; I offer free novels to any child who finds a book that piques their interest.

The problem I'm currently facing is how to store and display our collection of books- their current home is the countertop in the back of my classroom.

I have tried to arrange our classroom library to take up as little space as possible, but my hope is that this DonorsChoose project will supply us with sturdy shelves. The book trees I have selected will allow my students ease to peruse the stories available to them and develop critical literacy skills as a result.
