My classroom is made up of 19 six and seven year old boys and girls in a suburb just outside of Detroit. My students spend the majority of their school day with me, with the exception of their specials classes. In our classroom we do reading, writing, language arts, health, science, and social studies.
As a teacher, I work hard to get to know all aspects of each of my students to best meet their needs and foster classroom community.
Students academic abilities and learning style range by the subject and content material. Resources and materials need to be differentiated, meaningful and engaging to meet the needs of every student. I try to provide as many hands on learning experiences as possible as I believe students learn best by doing
My Project
My students thrive through creativity and exploration. They love any opportunity to build and design and are very hands on, imaginative, and creative. We have monthly STEM days for my class where students are given multiple tasks to choose from and have to engineer a way to solve the task at hand. We have started a Maker Space that allows students have the opportunity to dream, plan, design and engineer their very own passion projects but are in need of materials. These materials will allow students the freedom to explore their own ideas in their own way. The variety of items will allow them the tools they need to engineer and express their project in a way that is meaningful to them. The blocks give them engineering materials they may need to design working models and explore architecture. There are fun components such as led lights, batteries and copper wire tape where they can create functioning circuits. There are a lot of craft based materials to help them design and make the models they envision for their project with endless opportunities. The cardboard crafting materials allow them to turn pieces of cardboard into large working models!
Makerspace is self-guided and directed and the variety of materials gives them the freedom to be learners and leaders at the same time.
