Little Eggs, Big Lessons: Supporting Our Chick Project

Help me give my students an incubator and brooding box so my students can experience the chick-hatching life cycle firsthand, building responsibility, curiosity, empathy and real-world science skills through hands-on learning.

My Project

The incubator and brooding box will make a meaningful difference in my students’ learning by turning our classroom into a hands-on science space. Instead of only reading about life cycles, students will observe them in real time. The incubator allows students to view development inside each egg and become invested in the chicks. Once the chicks hatch, the brooding box creates a safe environment where students can actively care for them by maintaining warmth, providing fresh bedding, and observe their early behaviors.

The incubator and brooder box will give my students an authentic chance to practice responsibility, scientific thinking, and problem-solving in ways that traditional assignments cannot.

The goals for hatching chicks in our classroom are rooted in creating deep, memorable learning experiences. They will collect data, make predictions, and record observations throughout the process. They will also practice responsibility as they care for the eggs and chicks each day.

Through this project, students gain valuable knowledge and life skills. Scientifically, they learn how embryos develop, what animals need to survive, and how environmental conditions impact growth. They strengthen observation skills as they notice changes over time and record what they see. In their daily lives, this project helps them develop empathy, patience, cooperation, and confidence. Caring for something fragile teaches them responsibility and shows them how their actions directly influence outcomes.

This project is especially meaningful for my special education students, who are working hard on reading, writing skills. Hands-on learning helps them make connections that are difficult to build through textbooks alone. They will practice reading by following instructions and learning about chick development. They will strengthen writing by keeping science journals, labeling diagrams, and recording daily notes. Most importantly, hatching chicks gives them a chance to feel capable, proud, and successful across both academic and life-skills learning.
