Little Dumpling Shop: A Financial Literacy Experience

My students need a play store, cash register, air fryer, dim sum steamer, dumpling molds, play doh, and books about financial literacy to run our own dumpling shop.

My Students

Our early childhood school is now in its tenth year serving the community. In our Pre-K class, that means over 180 students will have come and gone from this Pre-K classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after-school programs, and summer camp.

Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.

Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in, and we hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love for learning.

I've been teaching at my first and current school for six years. No matter who enters through that door, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.

My Project

Our school is in the heart of Flushing, Queens. Foodies from all over the city will take the number 7 train to trek to Flushing to eat all the delicious kinds of foods available at cheap prices.

Dumplings, Xiao long bao, steamed rice rolls, dim sum, and scallion pancakes are all kinds of delicious foods found in Queens' own Chinatown and dumplings will be available in our very own classroom.

Many of our students are very familiar with the dumpling making process as their parents make the delicious food at home or in restaurants. I want the learning experience to be as authentic as possible. Financial literacy may be a difficult concept for pre K aged students to grasp, but introduced in a way our kids are familiar with, it may be learned naturally and in a fun and delicious way. We need a play store, air fryer, dim sum steamer, dumpling molds, and play dough to create our own dumpling shop.

Our kids will learn what it takes to run a business. The hope is that we can reach out to our local business for help and advice. At first it will be through play. Play dough dumplings will be sold at our pretend restaurant where play money will be exchanged. At this phase, our kids will learn the skills it takes to make the dough and filling.

After the interest becomes more developed, we will start a real dumpling shop where our kids will be in charge of making dumplings and creating prices to sell to our customers.As a class, we will talk financials and discuss how many should come in an order and how much it'll cost. The experience will be a memorable one for our kids and their families.
