The students in my kindergarten classroom come to me from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, experiences, learning styles and abilities. I have two classes, an AM and PM. My students come to school eager to learn and typically show tremendous growth in our a half day program. We are a Title 1 school and about a quarter of our students come from lower socioeconomic households. The district is mostly residential with very few businesses. Our district is a desirable place to live due to great communities and schools.
Structured learning activities via interactive games, technology, crafts, songs and dance seem to really reach my students best, enhancing their learning experiences, and facilitating the academic and social growth of my kinders.
It is very important to me to provide my kindergarteners with the tools and experiences they need to successfully meet the high expectations of 21st Century learners.
I was provided new grouping tables (half-moon) for my kindergarten classroom 4 years ago to implement seating for Guided Reading groups and Math stations; however, the chairs were not in the budget and the old ones are worn, coming loose from the metal frames, and do not fit the newer tables well.
Our district is once again growing so that means more children need to fit comfortably in the classroom.
With the old chairs I can seat 4 comfortably at a table. This year I'll need to place 5 and 6 student at the curved side of each table. Even though I am only asking for 24 chairs, they will be utilized by about twice as many students daily. Currently, our K, 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders use the same size chairs. Many of the kindergarteners cannot even touch the ground when the sit in them.
They are simply too big to fit my little students and their tables.
