Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is in a high poverty area. Most of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. I see my students wanting to succeed but the odds are stacked against them. They have limited opportunities for exposure to technology, the arts, performances, museums and other enrichment activities because their families can't afford it. I feel very passionate about giving them equal opportunities for access to education. Part of my job is to find ways to foster and develop a love for learning that will uplift them throughout their lives. As a teacher with almost fifteen years of experience under my belt, I have learned that my students need many interventions. But above all, they need to fall in love with learning during their primary years. That is why I feel the urgency to find ways to enrich my classroom and fulfill my students' needs.
My Project
Research supports the importance of providing an environment where small children are able to move about freely and adopt different learning positions. Making physical connections with learning is very important for small children. But most importantly small students need to connect to their teacher and to their environment. This connections start by feeling comfortable in their classroom. As an artist myself, I love to integrate learning with movement and the performing arts. Currently I have 52 students and each of them has to share a desk about 3 feet long. The classroom is small and is overtaken by bulky furniture. It is a challenge to do any movement and performing arts related activities such as dance, tableau, plays or any activity that requires students to get out of their desks. I often find myself maneuvering around the classroom to reach my students. I would like to provide opportunities for the performing arts by giving my classroom a "makeover". If I could, I would throw the huge desks out the window so I could provide a more natural and flexible seating arrangement in the classroom and make space for more art. I want to fund-raise so I can purchase stability balls, scoop rocker chairs, wobbly chairs and stools and rocking chairs that can be easily moved out of the way and rearranged for performances. Little bodies need to move! Little bodies need the arts!
