My Students

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn -Ben Franklin. It is essential for my primary students to have the opportunity to channel their energy into active learning. Kindergarten and first graders are naturally curious about their environment.

With this in mind, I initiated a project to turn an old dingy room into an exciting math lab.

The purpose was to create a surrounding that is both comfortable and less intimidating for students to learn. This creative and fun environment currently provides struggling learners with new opportunities to investigate math concepts through the use of manipulatives and technology. We have found the most success with developmental learners. These students strive to do well, but are easily intimidated and struggle to conform to the traditional classroom and curriculum. My goal is to build the confidence and self-esteem of students who are commonly overwhelmed by math and provide educators with the ability to extend learning opportunities. Though we are in the final stages of this project, we have found that we are lacking adequate centers, manipulatives, and games for the younger students of our school. I am in need of additional materials to target the needs of my primary students.

My Project

I currently co-teach with teachers in grades k-4 and plan lessons in our math lab. Our youngest learners are the most rambunctious and need to be engaged in learning centers. They will enjoy the instant math centers by investing fractions by making fraction trains, counting and sorting geometrical shapes into sorting jars, or ordering numbers caught at a fishing center. Educational software is always of high interest to students. I know my students will be motivated to investigate money, time, addition, subtraction, and geometry through competitive games on the Poly Vision board. Additionally, they can hop and count numbers on a fishy rug or practice counting by sorting sets of "sea creatures". Lastly, students can investigate STEM concepts by creating rafts, comparing items that sink and float, and explore and understand the science behind buoyancy.

My students attend a high poverty school and often have limited access to technology and educational materials.

These materials will be used during daily lessons, at centers in the math lab, and during tutoring sessions. I am confident that my students will benefit from being an active participant in various math centers and remember what they have learned through their experiences.
