Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Early literacy skills are imperative in the development of life long learners. The earlier reading and writing skills are introduced and built upon, the more successful students will be in their academic future. In my Bilingual Kindergarten class at Otis Elementary, I try to give my students as many opportunities for self expression, in English as well as in Spanish, as possible. When a unit of study is completed, we brain storm ideas and create class books,(individual and/or group) as a means for the children to express ideas about what they have learned. The books become part of our classroom library. It is a pleasure to watch them share these books with each other and any visitors we may have. Ownership of their work is an important element to building self esteem and pride in what they produce at this young age. My request for them is for a laminating machine and a spiral book binder. With laminated pages and spiral bindings their books would be more durable and individual books that are sent home at the end of the school year can be shared with their families for years to come. I would be greatly appreciative of anyone that shares my vision and would help these Little Authors become Publishers as well.
