"If I can help somebody as I travel along, then my living shall not be in vain." I have always guided myself by this quote because I know that if it wasn't for the people who helped me along the way, I honestly don't know where I would be today. I am a 7th grade ELA teacher at IS109 in Queens Village, New York. The majority of my students are African American and 50% of the students receive free lunch. I started a girls book club last year with ten of my 7th grade ELA students. Today, our book club has grown to 20 young women from grades 7 and 8. Though the 8th grade members have moved on to a different ELA class and teacher, they still continue to participate in the club. When I asked them why they still wanted to participate, they said that the book club gives them an opportunity to discuss and explore things that they normally wouldn't try. Reading for us has become an experience. I don't simply select books to read and put away. I select literature that the students can relate to. I use the books to reach them and teach them lessons. During our meetings, we discuss life, peer pressure, teenage issues, relationships and so much more. The book club gives us an opportunity to bond and discover the message that the text is trying to relay. To date we have read one book by Sistah Souljah and two books by Sharon Flake. These authors offer a realistic approach that minority teens can relate to. It has been a blessing to see how much the girls have grown and matured since the book club's start. However, as a school under regional review, the funding to buy new texts does not exist. I am hoping that you can help us by purchasing the next books that we hope to read. The next book that we would like to read is "The Color Purple," by Alice Walker. Also, I would like my students to read "Darkness Before Dawn," by Sharon Draper. Finally I am requesting "No Disrespect" by Sistah Souljah. We will need 10 copies of each. Your contribution will be more than appreciated. These books are more than just donations, they are steps in the right direction. You will assist my goal, to address and expose these young women to truth. I believe that if we address the issues that they encounter now, we can prevent a lot of mistakes later. Thank you and be blessed!!!
