Literature to Guide Humanity

Help me give my students books on genocide beyond the Holocaust. Many students believe this is the only example of genocide, I want them to see other stories from other places.

My Project

Genocide study is nothing new and many students have a working knowledge of genocide through the exploration of the Holocaust, however, often their knowledge in school stops there. Occasionally, the genocide in Rwanda is mentioned but rarely are memoirs of survivor experiences beyond the Holocaust studied and analyzed. Giving students memoirs of survivors from multiple genocides can open their eyes to the injustice and inhumanity of man. My goals for this project is to engage readers in analyzing the memoir through the lens of the stages of genocide; to encourage empathy, understanding, and knowledge to prevent these events in the future. The novel The Cat I Never Named, is a memoir of a Muslim teen struggling to survive in the midst of the Bosnian genocide, this memoir not only reaches teens because it is written about the experience of a teen, but it also expands students knowledge of a genocide that is not often studied. I believe reading about the experiences of genocide from a teens perspective, helps students to connect in a way that just learning the historical pieces of genocide cannot do. My students come from a diverse background and often do not have access to books that are unique, new or engaging due to budget constraints, so often they read the same novels repeatedly throughout their school experience. Many of my students have read "Night" multiple time and in multiple grade levels, but when asked about other genocides they have read about, there are none. I want to change this and give students the opportunity to understand genocide is not just the Holocaust.
