Helen Keller once wrote, "literature is my utopia" for my students, literature is also their utopia. My students read dozens of books every month. They come to class eager to discuss characters and story lines. With one another, they share their joint enthusiasm over the pain of losing a character in their favorite John Green novel My students love to read, and they love to share that love of reading with each other and the other students of our school.
Literature has been a bridge for my students to connect to one another and connect to something outside of themselves.
For the past two years, students have endured a global pandemic that has caused them to struggle to build relationships, stay on top of school work, and manage the heavy emotions they face as middle school students on top of dealing with a world-wide crisis. As students begin to transition back into life without isolation or masks, they do so with an awe inspiring amount of vigor and determination. Reading books alone and together is just one way this transition can be made just a bit easier.
My Project
Across the country, literacy scores have been continually dropping, especially in the last two years. To counteract this problem, educators have implemented countless program to help our children learn to read. While these programs are beneficial, students learning virtually and being disconnected from others for an extended amount of time has made reading even more difficult to promote.
My classroom is full of students who need to form connections to one another and connect to people who are in similar circumstance.
Novels help students to do just that.
This project aims to help the students in my class dive deeper into reading by providing small reading "book clubs" within the class as well as an array of young adult novels that speak to the many issues students are currently going through. These books will help them build connections while also increasing their literacy level. We will use these novels for independent reading, group reading in the classroom and creating projects to promote the love of reading among students. This project will benefit the students a whole because my students will take the books they are reading and share the stories with one another.
