This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious, engaged, and eager learners with a drive to experience and explore. They come to me with deep abiding passions that pursue in myriad ways, whether it is Science Olympiad or Speech and Debate.
They are excited about learning and growing.
My Project
Last spring, several of my students joined a group called Diversify Our Narratives. They reached out to teachers asking them to increase the representation and diversity in what is taught. They asked us to pledge to include 50% of texts from BIPOC writers.
Every reader I know has had a book that has changed the way they move through the world and I would like to ensure that the texts that my students read challenge their thinking, acting as both a mirror and a window onto the world.
In an effort to help diversify our curriculum, we have been acquiring enough copies of Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, a Japanese British Nobel Prize-winning author. We are 10 books short for a whole class set for my Honors 10th-grade English class.
I also hope to share Kate Chopin's novella, The Awakening. This story provides both social commentary and psychological insight into how a woman navigates her world and becomes increasingly actualized.
